With true Lombardy pride, the Risorgimento patriot and philosopher, Carlo Cattaneo, wrote, “Without calling ourselves better than other populations, we stand up to comparison with any other as more illustrious for intelligence, or more admired for virtue…” Other important figures that represent the pride of Lombardy include the Latin poet Virgilio, Michelangelo Merisi, who was known as ‘il Caravaggio’, Alessandro Manzoni, Alessandro Volta and Pope John XXIII. The people from Lombardy are good workers and they have a great sense of duty, but they also know how to give importance to self-gratification and enjoyment.
